Anniversaries and the Quest for Groceries

To celebrate her 5 month birthday and the 1 week mark in the new place, baby sat up by herself today.

We also finally got (another) new fridge. Not exactly what I was expecting, but at least it's bigger than the last one. I also think it is identical to the fridge our family had in 1987...  But in any case, it will have to do.

Now that we finally have a fridge, we decided to go out in search of groceries.  Considering the fact that at our doorstep, we have a million restaurants, coffee shops, 7-11's, doctors (I think we passed at least 5 yesterday just walking around), dentists (there are 2 within 20 paces of our building), vets, pet shops, liquor stores, bakeries, banks, car dealerships (Porsche, anyone?), two MRT (subway) stations, at least 5 schools (3 elementary and 2 high schools that I've noticed within 5 min walk), hiking trails, parks/playgrounds, and pretty much anything else you could possibly ever want - ONE WOULD THINK THERE WOULD BE A FREAKING GROCERY STORE.  Somewhere.

Ugh.

Online search proved unfruitful.  We asked the doorman.  He looked completely puzzled and directed us to the 7-11.  "No, we need a place to buy proper groceries..."  He nodded his head in understanding and proceeded to direct us to this place:

Indeed, it was a massive shop.  With aisles upon aisles of... stuff.

Need a loofah shaped like a swiss roll or toast?

How about a selection of face/neck/leg rollers?
Let's care for your body in the everyday bath room!

A magical place where you can buy stickers while looking at..

bras...  (in the same aisle!)

Also, loads and loads and loads of packaged/snack foods (all unidentifiable).

And yet. No.real.food.

::sigh::

We ended up walking 20 minutes to a Japanese grocery store that was TEENY TINY and proceeded to find a 2sq ft "american" section, where we found a small bottle of white vinegar for $3.  And some red onion.  Arrived home completely exhausted.  What a lot of effort to make a simple salad!!!!

  1. That store would what we call the "Everything store." Here are the grocery stores you can look out for: Wellcome (yes, with two "l's"), Carrefour, Taisuco, RT-Mart, Matsusei (good quality, but expensive), A-Mart, Jason's & City Super's (both are geared for Westerners and have higher prices)... google map them?

  2. Matsusei was the one we eventually went to... We cabbed to Costco and Carrefour today, but it is a freaking mission with the kids, the carrier, the stroller, the diaper bag, and then finally, our groceries. We are looking to get a car now.
